Project Humanity's Story
In October of 2005, my wife, Edita, and I moved to Boston, MA to attend school. I was in my first year of law school with hopes of studying Human Rights Law. She was attending the Massachusetts School of Pharmacy to study nuclear medicine.
At the beginning of our second semester of school, Edita was diagnosed with stage-four kidney cancer. Our lives took a dramatic turn as she immediately had major surgery to remove a 22cm mass, along with her kidney. There were many setbacks as her body was riddled with tumors.
The doctors gave Edita a maximum of six months to live if none of the experimental treatments worked. We spent an average of one week per month in the hospital. During our time in the hospital, we came up with our idea for project humanity.
We began talking about all the suffering in the world. It was easy to empathize due to our own situation. We were surrounded by expensive treatments, medicines, and some of the most advanced medical facilities in the world. So much was invested in attempting to help Edita regain her health.
But what about the rest of the world? What about all of the other suffering and death? What were the easiest and most cost effective ways of relieving this terrible suffering? We quickly realized it was clean water.
We immediately began researching water development and working on the initially stages of project humanity. Edita’s love of life, the massive support of friends and family, and hope for all that we could do in the future kept her going.
After fighting hard for 19months, Edita passed away on October 5th, 2008.
Project Humanity officially launched in January 2012. We have a lot of work ahead of us. We need a lot of support. But our mission is important. People deserve access to clean water and we will work endlessly to get it.
I know we can do this. And I know that with each well we dig, Edita will be there, smiling.
In loving memory of Edita Seever – August 6th, 1976 – October 5th, 2008
Sincerely,
